My painting depicts the back streets of an inner Sydney suburb. My subject captures the narrow houses, chimneys, and windows typical of old Sydney. Old Sydney is closely connected to my family history.
The families of both my parents came to Australia in the 19th century. My maternal great-great-great-grandfather came from Manchester, England, and in 1839 he opened ‘The Temple of Fashion’ at 479 George Street, Sydney. My maternal grandparents were married in the Great Synagogue in 1913.
My family was part of the fabric of the city, running businesses and owning property in the city and inner city suburbs. They were prominent in the community.
