An exhibition focusing on the universal theme of Home and Family inviting audiences on a journey of reflection and discovery into ‘the homes’ and experiences of others

An exciting, free exhibition showcasing a fascinating mix of Aboriginal, Jewish and Korean art is set to open in Bondi Junction this August.

my place + your place = a better place is the second annual event in the Tikkun Olam multicultural exploration series and is co-presented by Jewish Arts Inc and Shir Madness Jewish Music Festival. The exhibition will be showing at Waverley Library, Denison Street, Bondi Junction, from August 6 to September 7, 2016.

Tikkun Olam, (from the Hebrew, “to repair the world”) is a Jewish concept encompassing social justice, friendship, peace and the environment. This show embraces Tikkun Olam through a deeper understanding of one another’s cultural values, and the forging of friendships.

Curator Estelle Rozinski believes that “every culture and every home has something beautiful, rich and rare to offer”. She invited artists of Aboriginal, Jewish and Korean origin to share and depict aspects of their family history. These personal narratives, often underpinned by sacred and traditional threads have been used to create images, objects and text.

This show builds on the relationships forged in the first Tikkun Olam exhibition, April 2015 between Aboriginal, Hindu, Jewish and Korean artists. The artistic process includes a series of intercultural, collaborative workshops to share artists’ stories, cultural heritage and experience. The workshops are an integral part of this intercultural exchange.

The exhibition will formally be opened on Tuesday 9 August at 6pm by Janelle Evans (recipient of the Wingara Mura-Bunga Barrabugu Fellowship, Sydney College of the Arts) to coincide with World Indigenous Day.
